Babyccino – Why Many Coffee Shops Serve Them?

Coffee shops’ demographic is the adult population, especially young professionals. Children are far from their target market. However, the child and beverage sectors are getting so much traffic that coffee shops are now thinking of ways to cater to the younger market. Starbucks is one of the coffee shop brands that now welcome the younger market through their latest offering – Babyccino Starbucks.

What is babyccino and why do coffee shops like Starbucks serve it?

Let’s look at the origin of the word babyccino. It comes from two words: baby and cappuccino. Let’s put it simply this way –  a babyccino is a foamy milk-based beverage for children minus the coffee/espresso. Many believed that it was first served in North America, but people there call it steamer. Although many also believed that the term babyccino was first coined in Australia. It was in the early 2000s when the name appeared on the coffee shop menu. In 2016, the word babyccino was officially added to Australian National Dictionary.

Today, coffee shops from different parts of the world serve babyccino. Starbucks is one of them under the name Babyccino Starbucks. It is prominent in major coffee-consuming markets, but sometimes you will be dismayed because it is not always on the menu. If you don’t see it on their menu, don’t worry for you can always order it off the menu. Here’s another treat – most of the time, it is free of charge.

You might be wondering why coffee shops allow you to order it off the menu, when, in fact, coffee shops target the adult population. Well, there are many good reasons why coffee shops start to serve babyccino, and we will discuss some of them.

  • Babyccino provides kids with a feeling of equality, especially when they sit and drink their coffee together with their parents and guardians. Sometimes parents want to drink their coffee, but they are forced not to when they are with their children. they would dine in places where there are available beverages for kids. With a babyccino, parents no longer have to sacrifice their coffee cravings, plus, their children feel like they are drinking a miniature coffee, when, in fact, they are drinking age-appropriate drinks.
  • It helps increase sales. You probably are wondering how babyccino would drive more customers and improve sales when it is off the menu and most of the time offered for free. Well, offering babyccino for free or for a little amount will drive more sales to coffee shop owners in the sense that it will bring in more customers. Parents can tag along with their kids whenever they are craving coffee. Instead of moving to a restaurant that serves kid-friendly drinks, they would rather stay in a coffee shop like Starbucks because there is something to drink for their little one.

Serving babyccino is a win-win situation for both the coffee shop owners and customers. If you have not tried ordering babyccino before because it is not listed on the menu, don’t be shy to ask the barista.
